Banned Books Week LGBTQIA+ Book Drive

Banned Books Week LGBTQIA+ Book Drive

Banned Books Week is September 26-October 2, 2021. Because many of the most frequently challenged and banned books are those with LGBTQIA+ authors and characters, River Dog Book Co. (WI) has teamed up with Chapters Books & Gifts (NE) to celebrate Banned Books Week with an LGBTQIA+ book drive. This is our way to support authors who have encountered opposition to their books and to get books with LGBTQIA+ characters into the hands of readers who need them.

Ways to participate:

1. Read a book with an LGBTQIA+ author or character yourself, whether you’re LGBTQIA+ or not. Reading widely builds empathy and understanding and makes the world a better place for us all!

2. Donate a book by an LGBTQIA+ author/illustrator or featuring an LGBTQIA+ character. To purchase a book from our online store to donate, select your book(s) and ship them to River Dog Book Co., 148 E Milwaukee St, Jefferson, WI 53549. Click the button below to be taken to a book list of recommended titles for this book drive.

3. Donate your book, if you’re an author of an LGBTQIA+ book.

4. Connect us with a school, group, or other organization in the Oconomowoc/Lake Country/Jefferson County, WI area that would like to receive donated books and can get them to the readers who need them.

Some wonderful authors brainstormed and came up with suggested titles for elementary, middle school, and high school (click the button above to view them). This list is a starting point; we know we’ve left off many excellent books, and we hope you won’t be limited to only those on our list. HOWEVER, we will NOT donate books that contain inaccurate or misleading content.

Thank you for helping us spread a little love during Banned Books Week!
