River Dog Reads: Seafire by Natalie C. Parker

Today is the last day of Children’s Institute. I’m exhausted but exhilarated by all of the wonderful people i’ve met, the inspiring conversations I’ve had, and of course, am THRILLED with all of the new books I’ve picked up! I’m going to have to do a debrief post at some point, but for now, on this final day of the conference, here’s one of the not-yet-published books being promoted here at the conference that I’ve already read and am talking up like crazy.

River Dog Review: Joining the ranks of Katniss, Hermoine, and more recently Serendipity Jones and Jane McKeene is Captain Caldeonia Styx. She commands an all-female crew that sails the seas exacting revenge against the pirate warload and his army of Bullets – the men who destroyed their families. The sisterhood is strong. The sisterhood is smart. The sisterhood includes all women, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexuality, or ability. The sisterhood is about to use all the weapons at their disposal to tear this patriarchy down. If the Mors Navis was taking on crew, I’d sign up NOW and never look back.

Seriously, one of the worst days of my life was realizing this was the first in a trilogy and that I had just finished book 1, with no release date for #2 or #3 yet. Not to be dramatic or anything, but LIFE OVER. Luckily, the world is full of amazing books to read, but still, I’m mentally counting down to a day I don’t know yet, when I can pick up the next Seafire fantasy.

Publisher Description: The first in a heart-stopping trilogy that recalls the undeniable feminine power of Wonder Woman and the powder-keg action of Mad Max: Fury RoadSeafire follows the captain of an all-female ship intent on taking down a vicious warlord’s powerful fleet.

After her family is killed by corrupt warlord Aric Athair and his bloodthirsty army of Bullets, Caledonia Styx is left to chart her own course on the dangerous and deadly seas. She captains her ship, the Mors Navis, with a crew of girls and women just like her, who have lost their families and homes because of Aric and his men. The crew has one mission: stay alive, and take down Aric’s armed and armored fleet. But when Caledonia’s best friend and second-in-command barely survives an attack thanks to help from a Bullet looking to defect, Caledonia finds herself questioning whether to let him join their crew. Is this boy the key to taking down Aric Athair once and for all…or will he threaten everything the women of the Mors Navishave worked for?

Pairing gorgeous prose with pulse-pounding action, Seafirereminds us of the importance of sisterhood and unity in the face of oppression and tyranny.
